Mediolittoral sands are characterised by the annelids Ophelia radiata and Nerine cirratulus, the isopod crustacean Eurydice affinis and the pelecypod mollusc Mesodesma corneum. Coarse sands encourage the settlement of Ophelia radiata, and fine sands that of Nerine cirratulus, while Mesodesma corneum often avoids calcareous sands.
